In nearly every issue of Freshwater we refer to Innovative Faith Communities. That’s because IFCs are central to the purpose of Mission Alive–to equip leaders to develop innovative communities of faith focused on transforming marginalized communities.

Innovation doesn’t always mean doing something brand new, but it does require introducing a new way of thinking or doing that is not the status quo. Innovative ideas address genuine needs and work to make life better.

Here are innovative ways some of our IFCs are going about ministry in their context:

New River Church (2006) Forney, Texas — Planted by Ben and Shannon Stevens, the church, after years of meeting in homes and renting worship space, is moving ahead with plans to build a 3D printed church building.

Made for More (2025) Bertram, Texas — One of our newest IFCs was born out of the obvious disparity in resources available to some areas of the community. Kelly Bolin, our first female led IFC, and her team decided the status quo wasn’t working. Their research led them to connect the untapped resource of retirees in Bertram to work with students as reading tutors and mentors.

The Table-Irving (2023) Irving, Texas — A  community garden may not be a new idea but it is a new way of building community in southeast Irving, Texas. Thanks to Steve and Laura Allen, IFC leaders of The Table-Irving, residents will enjoy the double benefits of building relationships and sharing fresh food.

Redland Hills Church (2013) Wetumpka, Alabama — Planted by Wes and Amanda Gunn, Redland Hills’ focus on families has resulted in tremendous growth in their children program, including kids with special needs. To make their church a welcoming place, they partnered with an organization to offer sensory kits for kids and formed a buddy system that provides an adult volunteer to help kids with special needs participate in their Kid’s Space and thrive.

Lufkin Street Ministries 2540 (2024) Lufkin, Texas — Jason and Sarah Hollinger learned that the status quo of helping people in Lufkin currently experiencing homelessness doesn’t work. They are working hard to develop a ministry that helps find permanent housing and purpose through a network of community partnerships.
