Mental health challenges for the newly housed homeless
Steve Allen, The Table-Irving
Over the past decade, my wife, Laura, and I have developed deep relationships with individuals who live on the streets of Irving, Texas. What initially began as a desire to fix their situations and pull them out of their pain slowly evolved into a realization that quick fixes wouldn’t cut it. The tangled web of issues that led to their homelessness demanded a more nuanced and compassionate approach. The Lord has paved the way for us and others on our Table-Irving team to walk alongside these individuals, helping them unearth and address the root causes of their homelessness.
Statistics have shown the harrowing truth of the high percentage of traumatized homeless individuals, with rates soaring as high as 91%. Traumatic events have often left deep scars, manifesting as PTSD or complex PTSD, creating a maze of re-lived traumas, avoidance behaviors, and emotional turbulence. We began to understand that merely providing shelter wasn’t enough. It was vital to connect our friends with other services, like counseling. Income-based counseling programs have become the gateway to healing for many, offering them a chance to navigate through their traumas and mental health struggles. Collaborating with Sweet Deeds Foundation, our commitment is bearing fruit, weaving a tapestry of hope and change in the lives of those bravely rebuilding after the storm of homelessness.
But the journey doesn’t end there. Building healthy relationships is another cornerstone of rebuilding lives. Through tailored support groups we walk together with our friends as they learn how to trust, forging connections that are based on support and understanding rather than toxic behaviors they have grown accustomed to. The long road to healing for the newly-housed homeless is intricate, demanding a holistic approach. By addressing trauma, mental health challenges, and fostering relationship-building skills, we work to empower individuals to break free from their past and step boldly into a brighter future.
