In Honor of Mothers
By Candace Vogt
Recently I have been watching several animal documentaries. Some of my favorite scenes are those of mothers and their young. Mothers like the humpback whale that travel great distances often at great risk to themselves to give birth. Mothers who sacrifice their own food to sustain their offspring like the Pacific octopuses, and female elephants who will fiercely protect their young. God does the same for us.
I love the images in scripture of God as a mother, “As a mother comforts her child, so I will comfort you,” (Is. 66:13) and as a protector of beloved offspring, ‘”He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge.” (Ps. 91:4) Just as a loving mother does, God gathers us in his loving arms and sings over us.
This leads me to think of some of the marginalized communities in which Mission Alive is working. Communities where mothers are crying over children, worrying about their safety or how to provide for them. Mission Alive has opportunities for you to join other women who are willing to physically or financially step into communities with mothers and children who need to be gathered and cared for with God’s love in tangible and innovative ways.
Mission813 is a group of women who want to listen to these mothers and help be a part of the answer. If you would like to explore how you might help, we have some ideas to share. We would also like to introduce you to some courageous women and mothers who are on the front lines right now.
