One of the most exciting parts of our work here at Mission Alive is walking alongside leaders as they explore launching new Innovative Faith Communities (IFCs). These faith communities don’t start with programs or strategies but with people. That’s why we take leadership discernment so seriously. It’s a process that takes time–time to listen to God, for both potential leaders and Mission Alive’s team. The process is not meant as a barrier but as a means of discovering and developing the right leaders for the marathon that is launching an IFC.

When we assess potential IFC leaders we’re not looking for perfection. We’re looking for signs of a life shaped by Jesus and oriented toward God’s mission. Our assessment focuses on six main factors we believe are essential for healthy, sustainable ministry in marginalized communities.

First, we look for a mature life in God — disciples who submit themselves through prayer, Scripture, and a growing dependence on the Spirit. We also look for how they love the world, especially the diverse communities where IFCs take shape.

Because IFCs are made entirely of connections, relationships are another key area. We look for leaders who are curious about people, hospitable, and willing to invest deeply over time. With this, we pay attention to their way of life and character — humility, resilience, integrity, an ability to enjoy life– these all matter in cross-cultural ministry.

Of course, the gospel remains central. We’re looking for leaders who not only understand the good news of Jesus but also believe that people flourish when the good news enters a community. Finally, we consider leadership — not just vision casting, but the ability to equip others, form teams, and cultivate new leaders.

Each of these six areas includes several additional qualities we explore together through conversation, observation, coaching, and shared experiences. If you or someone you know might be called to help start an IFC, we’re ready to begin that conversation. God keeps surprising us by raising up new leaders in surprising places, and we’re excited to discover who He’s preparing next.
