Perhaps you have never given much thought to the value of coach training because you don’t ever see yourself being a coach. I’d like to challenge you to consider your need for coach training. I’ve heard it said that the essence of relationships is conversation. Building meaningful and authentic relationships depends upon our ability to sustain conversations that are easy, unguarded, and vulnerable. Conversations like that demand that we believe in others, respect their thinking, and honor their beliefs and values. If I have to be careful about what I say to you for fear that you won’t agree or that sharing my situation will inevitably lead to unwanted advice or help, then I am not free. I guard what I say and I protect what is tender.
You may not imagine yourself ever being a coach, but we all want to be the catalyst of great conversations and authentic relationships. Coaching is a whole new way to think about conversations combined with the essential skills that build trust and authenticity. Coach training is harder than most people think because it requires a complete rewiring of many bad conversational habits. If you are interested in investing in others and building authentic relationships, then consider your need for coach training. In your conversations, how often do you:
Ask yes/no questions?
Want to have something to say?
Feel useful when you offer suggestions?
Ponder whether you agree or disagree with what someone says?
Evaluate the logic in other’s thinking?
If these are part of your conversations, then consider your need for coach training–it will change the way you relate to others.
