When Wes and Amanda Gunn hosted international guests, they frequently asked them what was most surprising about the USA. The answer was often how long Americans could go without talking to their neighbors. This convicted Wes and Amanda to be more intentional with their neighbors in the Redland community. According to census data, Redland is one of the fastest growing areas in the state but one of the least churched.
With the guidance and training of Mission Alive, Redland Hills Church launched in 2014. The launch team began connecting with others in the area through block parties, backyard Bible camps, outdoor movies, and other fun events. Small groups started meeting in homes during the week, while Sunday worship gathered at a community clubhouse. The first Sunday gathering of 52 people has grown to almost 300! Their 2023 Easter service was a record-breaking 521 people across three services.
Redland Hills focuses on three main areas: helping others Connect with Jesus, living in Community with each other, and showing Compassion for neighbors. Block parties are still part of the DNA, but there are more Bible study groups, GriefShare groups, a growing youth ministry, and an annual Serve Day.
Redland Hills supports the local pregnancy center, food bank, and organizations that share Jesus in areas like India, Malawi, and Panama. Members say it is a blessing to give to others, especially when they can give back to Mission Alive because their support has been priceless.
